My pen jar

Pens:
  • Uniball Jetstream .7. Again, great first impression with the narrower ballpoint line.
  • Pilot Vanishing point, vintage 80s model.
  • Uniball Jetstream 1.0 mm - This has become a favorite. I have tried the black, looking forward to seeing if the blue in a .7 is up the standard.
  • Pilot Acroball 1.0 mm - I found this Jetstream rival at CVS of all places. I really enjoy it, right in league with the Uniball. These pens add a level of texture that is just addictive.
  • Blackwing 602 pencil
  • Kaweco Sport in grey plastic. Spotty performance, very lightweight. I like the aesthetics but it hasn't been much fun to navigate.
  • Pilot Metropolitan. A classic and a great option for a while. It's started to get a little gimmicky, but at the price point you'd consider just replacing it with a new one.
  • TWSBI eco - (loaded with Diamine sunset.) Solid as a rock, always enjoyable if a little cumbersome to whip out, unscrew, post, etc.
  • Noodler's Blue Steel (ink). Dark and strong.
  • Diamine sunset (orange) (ink). Bright and light, not an everyday ink but a satisfying one.
  • Zebra Sarasa .5 gel pen in the vintage blue.
    • Despite my general disdain for Zebra, this is quite a nice pen, with a unique writing experience and barrel among gel pens and a charming color, blue with hints of smoky grey. It's a keeper.
  • Retro 51 Tornado, orange
    • This pen has been a general disappointment, despite much hype coming from the pen crowd. Between two refills, neither one wrote consistently (mainly skipping and just feeling a little "off" generally), then the button fell off of the top of the screw knob and the clip loosened. The whole thing just sort of broke down, and now it's a jangly, goofy mess. I just kind of threw in the towel and wedged an Energel refill into it. I didn't break the bank on it, but in future if I want another refillable nice pen I'll go the Karas Kustoms route.
  • Field Notes pocket memo book - Shenandoah (Red Maple)
    • I've come to really appreciate how sturdy this edition is. The colors are simple and elegant but they are more durable than some other recent editions, like the Nixon collaboration.
  • Pilot G-2 .5 blue
    • Solid enough pen. Feels a little off balance compared with the other competitive gel pens (like the energel). Slightly scratchy, slightly too dark, slightly gummy. Those all add up to second place in the pen jar.
  • uni-ball signo DX .38 (blue)
    • Very narrow but overall great performance. Cap comes off way too easily and it's annoying to the point of being a practical problem.
  • Pilot G-2 0.7 mm orange
    • I haven't done much with colorful pens, so I dipped in with this orange refill. It's enjoyable if a bit light-handed.
  • uni-ball signo um-153
    • This thing is huge...it leaves great schmears of blue-black ink wherever it writes. A pleasure when aesthetics are at the fore, but a hindrance for anything practical. A gift from a friend so it's a sentimental favorite and a very well-constructed object.
  • pentel energel liquid gel ink - 0.7 retractable needle tip - blue - link
    • Solid, solid pen. Enjoyable to write with, even if it's a bit broad. I need to try the .5 version.
  • uni-ball vision elite (black)
    • Great all-purpose pen, writes really well and has a reassuring construction. This is second-tier that you can lend around but still enjoyable to write with.
  • pilot precise v5 rt - retractable rolling ball - blue - link
    • Really enjoyed this but haven't returned to it in a while.
  • sharpie pen - fine - black - link
    • I don't actually like how finnicky this pen is regarding the angle that you write with it. I find I regularly have to readjust the angle at which I'm writing. Has dropped in my esteem, especially when compared with a solid pen like the vision elite.
  • Pilot Hi-Tec-C Maica 04 - blue
    • One of these intense pens that can make you feel like you're writing with a whale tusk. A nice objet d'writing but not an everyday bruiser.
Pencils:

Notebooks:
  • Doane Paper Goods 8.375x10.875 idea journal

  • Rhodia Reverse Book
    • This thing is nice! The square shape is both compact and expansive, giving the feeling that some free thought can take place alongside sentences. The graph paper is substantial without being too heavy, feels great with a fountain pen. In the long term, the graph is a little dark and heavy for me. I have found over time that I don't enjoy a dark grid that overpowers my actual writing.
  • Field Notes pocket memo book - Butcher Blue reproduction
    • The pop of bright blue is a welcome feature of my day even as the print wears down.
